On November 17, 1954 the American Field registry accepted 37 Vizsla registrations. All of the inaugural registrees were “imports”. The word “import” for the Vizsla is & isn’t what it “appears” to be. That is because there are two kinds of imports.
1. foreign-blood born on foreign soil
2. foreign-blood born on USA soil
Nineteen males were registered. Of those only five were “true” foreign born-imports, leaving 14 males chosen by the US.. Eighteen females were registered. Of those only five were “true” foreign born-imports, leaving 13 females a result of being chosen in the USA.
That meant that USA fanciers with their selective choices had just stepped into their future and our past three times over and mating dogs that likely never would have been mated together had they remained in Europe. They had yet to truly test the new breed in the field with the choices they made.
But all five were game to lead the way. That’s a story to be told another day, soon.
There are five major Vizsla importers & in 1954, they (Tallman, Osborn, Hunt, Hatfield/Olson) were the only importers. All five importers (Tallman (5), Osborn (40, 39 smooth, 1 wire), Hunt (number unknown, about 12-16 dogs). The Hunts were the only USA Vizsla breeder during the fifties to import from AND to England, & Olson/Hatfield (12-16), who worked together. Both Olson/Hatfield imported/owned Vizslas, GSPs and Weimaraners. Olson would be the only one of the two to reach hard copy in the historical renditions of the Vizsla, Weimaraner & GSP.
