Sometimes when life has gone wrong with you
And the world seems a dreary place
Has your dog ever silently crept to your feet
His yearning eyes turned to your face
Has he made you feel he understands
And all he asks of you
Is to share your lot, be it good or ill
With a chance to be loyal & true
Are you branded a failure? He does not know
A sinner” ? He does not care
You’re master to him, that’s all that counts
A word, and his day is fair
Your birth & your station mean nothing to him
A Palace & a Hut are all the same
And his love is yours in honor & peace
As it’s yours through disaster & shame
Though others forget you & pass you by
He is ever your faithful Friend
Ready to give you the best he has
Unselfishly, unto the End
I just love to thumb through the old dog books & came to a screeching halt over the data on the Harrier. A dog eighteen inches high & weighing 56 lbs is one huge furry rolling ball. I came to a screeching stop sign over the Bearded Collie. Ugly! The Shetland Sheepdog was an eye-opener too. It looked more like a miniature Border Collie than a miniature Collie. The Gazelle Hound from India must have been a magnificent beast. The Roughcoated French Basset is so very appealing. Wonder if it still exists? I thought the German Sheep/Shepherd Dog was magnificent. I have run across the area in Hungary called Dalmatia before but I never seriously thought the Dal came from Hungary? Now can I possibly add Dalmation crossbreeding to our breed history? J
Regarding the Hunting breeds, It is odd that the Spaniel was early (according to Gaston Phebus) on to come from Spain & there seem to be no Spanish or Portugese Spaniels originating from Spain at all. There is an interesting item about the Spanish Pointer that I previously didn’t know. The Spanish Pointers (breed root of Pointing breeds) were brown & white, with the white not supposed to pre-dominate.
Three of the six French Pointer breeds regularly had docked tails before 1915. The information about the The Bavarian Limer looked relevant to the Vizsla, to my un-Punnet Squared eyes. The Danish Pointer that also caught my attention as to its possible likeness to the Vizsla.
Recognizing the importance of game dogs & the first hunting breeds; there is a section on the various Greyhounds. The Phu-Quoc Greyhound is interesting because of its color (but not self-colored) fawn with a dark stripe down the back. One has to wonder why the dogs from Turkey have been left out as the yellow dog from the Mid-East is most likely to be the most originating of the dog breeds that later comprised it. Oh well, doesn’t mean I can’t turn over that rock for a better answer somewhere else.
